Canterbury

A beautiful day in England. Blue skies and warm temps.  A short train ride from Faversham and we arrived in Canterbury.  As usual, the Cathedral, which is the home of the Anglican Church, was partly sheathed in scaffolding.  Easy entry for us Concessioners (plus 65!) of only £11.50 each.  Did the walk around and listened to the Dutch Men’s Choir sing.  Then, a bonus.  Penny wanted to know where Becket’s remains are, since his shrine was destroyed by Henry VIII in 1538.  So she asked a volunteer, who happens to be......drum roll.......the leading expert on the subject.  Twenty minutes later, after an intense discussion, we parted ways, knowing that we will probably never know where Becket is.  It seems the Anglican Church is afraid what might happen if Becket is found.  Left the Cathedral and walked the Medieval streets of Canterbury, searching for M&S (Marks and Spencer).  Success, but, alas, nothing struck our fancy.  Found a pub to get a bite - Penny had a leek and chicken pie and I had fish and chips.  Walked the wall back to the train and got home in time to see our laundry foldedby our host Liz.  So nice.

Tomorrow, Faversham Saturday Market, Guided Town Walk, and dinner at another pub.

Well, our first few days in Faversham have been wonderful.  We checked in atourhome for the next month without fanfare.  Liz showed us the ropes quite literally.  The dryer is a clothesline!  A fire was laid waiting for a match.  All was spit spot. Off we went to Resco to lay in provisions, mostly beer and wine, but also meat and veggies and breakfast foods for our traditional English breakfasts that Penny loves to make.

That was Tuesday. Wednesday greeted us with a driving rain most of the day, but we did make it to the local tourist agency and back to Tesco for more.

Thursday broke gorgeous. So, went went for a walk to a really small brewery - three emplotees.  Great tour of the one room (in an old barn) brewery. After, we went to a local pub serving Mad Cat ale.  Delish!  Made some new friends in the pub, which probably will be our new hangout.

Returned home fro dinner and a fire. It got a little chilly last night.

Off to Canterbury today.
